Most people do not understand that photography is a very capital intensive business, a reason why most good photographers seem to charge high for their craft. It requires a lot of money to fund a photography business. Yet, every capital intensive business can still be started small. Note that the way you start your Photography business determines the kind of clients you’d attract. Also, decide if you want to go into Photography or Videography. To start up a photography business, some basic tools are required. In no particular order, here are some basic tools required to start up a small scale photography business.
1. A Professional Camera:
A photographer must own a Camera as photography cannot exist without a camera. A photographer that cannot afford a camera is not ready to own a photography business yet. Camera differs too. To start a professional Photography Business, one must own a professional camera to be able to get maximum results. The kind of camera you have will determine the output you’d receive. Good cameras are usually very expensive but not withstanding, you should get a good camera.
2. Camera Lense:
It is not enough to have a good camera. A good camera without a good lense is completely useless. You must have a lense. Lenses differs and infact are most times more expensive than the cameras themselves. For great results, a photographer needs to own a good lense. Lense to a great extent is photography.
3. A Memory Card/ An Hard Disk:
Your camera cannot function without a memory space. Memory Cards stores your pictures. As such, if you own a camera without a memory card, you can’t be able to shoot your pictures. You should have a memory card of at least 64Gb. More than one memory card is advisable and you should be ready to change them from time to time. Never, risk using a bad memory card or you’d risk losing your clients jobs. If your memory card shows any sign of being faulty, discard it immediately and get a new one. You would also need an external hard drive for your storage.
4. Camera Battery and Charger:
Your camera cannot power up without a battery. You need to have a camera battery. Infact, you need at least two camera batteries and a camera battery charger for your photography business. This is needed especially for outdoor and event photography. With two batteries, you can be using one while charging the other.
5. A Camera Bag:
You don’t just carry your equipments in your bare hands especially when going for an outdoor shoot. You need a Camera bag to properly carry your photography tools. Get a good camera bag that can properly accommodate your gadgets and carry them majestically. You need to package yourself properly.
6. A Computer:
Photography cannot be done with any computer. You need a good desktop/ laptop with a high speed processor to be able accommodate the photography softwares. For a startup freelancer that doesn’t own a studio, you are advised to buy a laptop rather than a desktop. Note, not every computer can be able to effectively run your photography business. Get a good one for maximum results.
Proper Lightening is Photography. Photography cannot exist without proper lightening. There are numerous photography lights. There are lights for outdoor and studio shoots as well. You need to get the right photography lights as proper lightening is the soul of photography.
8. Tripod Stand/ Light Stand/ Reflector/ Diffuser:
Well, you need to first know what a tripod stand and a reflector is. Your light needs a light stand, your camera needs a tripod stand (not very necessary for a startup) and your light needs a reflector and diffuser as well.
9. A good Phone and Data:
Date is life. Lol. You need a good mobile phone to communicate your clients. You should have a phone that has access to the internet. Since you probably don’t have a physical office, your shop/ photography office is basically, online. You should always be available and reachable. A good phone and data will help out.
10. More Lenses:
Like we stated early, a good photographer must have a good lense. One lense is not and can never be enough. Different lense performs different functions and serves different purposes. For instance, a zoom lense may not be able to perform the function of a wide angle Lense. They have their separate functions and serve their different purposes.
These equipments are really not enough to run a standard photography business but with these, one can manage a little startup as a freelance photographer. You must always try to update your gadgets and photography tools from time to time to meet up with the fast changing society.
If you can’t afford these, you don’t need to startup a photography business yet. You can look for a photographer or a photography studio and attach with them while saving up to get your own equipments. Or if you have somewhere to rent from, you can do so.
Don’t rush to become a boss; go through the process of becoming a boss.
You’d definitely love your photography business if you have the proper equipments and clients.
