It will surprise you to know that one female King existed in Igboland despite the general believe that there has never been a female King (Eze)
Meet King Ahebi Ugbabe, from Enugu- Ezike. She was born in the late 19th Century and died in 1948. Her father’s name was Ugbabe Ayibi and her mother’s name was Anekwu Amehin.
According to Wikipedia, she was the only female king in colonial Nigeria. Nwando Achebe described her thus: “She was a “slave” married to a deity, a runaway, a sexworker, a headman, a warrant chief and ultimately a female King. She was a strong leader of her people, yet also a collaborator empowered by and serving the British Colonial Regime in Nigeria.”
Would there have been a female King if not for the British Colonial Regime in Nigeria?
Will another female King ever emerge in Igboland?
